About

Headshot of Tristan Shouldice

Tristan Shouldice is an award-winning documentary photographer and multidisciplinary artist based on the West Coast of Canada. He trained formally in both film and digital photography and has worked for 20 years around the world photographing various stories, beautifully crafted buildings, ever-changing streets, unique families, countless weddings and events and simultaneously has documented his small family along the way.

While working as a darkroom technician in college he met his wife Jenna; they still collaborate creatively almost two decades later.

He also worked in a print lab, designed and ran multiple websites, managed documentary family photography workshops, teaches photography to photographers and enthusiasts, and most notably co-founded and ran the Documentary Family Awards. He has an endless list of creative endeavours but the most distinct are his paintings and his ability to sew. He most often makes clothes for his children and their friends, and completes the linear aspects of quilts for his wife at her gentle demand.

Tristan’s work spans across multiple genres and subject matter and is unified by his ability to follow his visual instincts. Although it’s evolved over the years, his style has always been distinguishable. He is forever curious about what’s in front of him, what can be made or unmade (he took apart a fair amount of electronics as a child for example) and he sees things in a way that people most often miss.

Somehow he is masculine and feminine at the same time, balancing the energy needed to be with and around all kinds of people and situations. He can photograph a new building and a new mother with equal interest, respect and grace.

Tristan is based mostly out of Victoria and Toronto and is available for projects worldwide.
